The Regional Government approved a compensation mechanism for Azorean fishermen worth 6.54 million euros to compensate for losses resulting from the implementation of the Marine Protected Areas. The measure was featured in the Friday, September 11, 2026 edition of the newspaper Açoriano Oriental. The mechanism aims to support professionals in the fishing sector who suffered losses due to the restrictions imposed by the creation of these protected areas in Azorean waters. This decision comes in a context of expansion of protected maritime zones in the autonomous region, which has been implementing marine conservation policies in its territories. The fishermen will thus be compensated for the limitations imposed on their traditional activity in the areas covered by the new Marine Protected Areas.
