At TAP, price is not enough

The Portuguese Government is in the final phase of reprivatizing TAP, having invited Lufthansa and Air France-KLM to improve their offers for the 44.9% stake by December 31. Although the State has injected 3.2 billion euros into the company and should seek to recover as much as possible, the article argues that price cannot be the decisive criterion. TAP, which in 2025 made a profit of 4.1 million euros with 16 million passengers, needs a strategic partner that guarantees the maintenance of its global network, particularly connections to Brazil, Africa, and the Portuguese diaspora. With more than 265 million Portuguese speakers and routes that transported two million passengers between Brazil and Europe in 2024, the article calls for the strategic criteria already defined in the tender specifications to be converted into measurable contractual commitments, not mere formal clauses.
