The basic food basket became cheaper in 25 of the 27 Brazilian capitals in August, according to the National Food Basic Basket Survey, conducted monthly by the Interunion Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese) in partnership with the National Supply Company (Conab). The most significant drops were recorded in Rio Branco (-4.68%), Manaus (-4.55%), Boa Vista (-4.47%), Aracaju (-3.89%), Cuiabá (-3.37%), and Salvador (-3.30%). Only two capitals registered increases: Maceió, with a rise of 1.43%, and São Luís, with an increase of 0.78%. In Rio de Janeiro, the basket cost R$ 851.19 during the period.
One of the main products responsible for the reduction in the basket's cost was the potato, whose price fell in all cities in the south-central region of the country. The drops ranged from -34.18% in Brasília to -14.65% in São Paulo. The average price per kilo of ground coffee also decreased in 23 of the 27 surveyed capitals. Other products such as tomato and beans became cheaper, contributing to the overall decline of the basic basket in most Brazilian cities.
