School year begins with 70 thousand students without all required teachers

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 22:14

The school year in Portugal begins with approximately 70,000 students without all the necessary teachers at their schools. This situation affects a significant number of students who will start classes without a complete teaching staff.

Minister Fernando Alexandre revealed that approximately 50% of national teacher needs are concentrated in Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. These two regions are the most affected by the teacher shortage.

According to the data presented, approximately two thousand teacher positions need to be filled across the country. This deficit of teachers poses significant challenges for the start of the school year.

The educational authorities thus face the task of completing these hirings in a short period of time, in order to ensure that all students have access to complete education from the very beginning of the school year.
