The Monastery of Cête, in Paredes, will feature in a route dedicated to José Saramago's passage through Tâmega e Sousa, as part of the European Heritage Days 2026. The initiative, titled "Journey to Portugal, by José Saramago," revives the journey made by the writer in 1979/1980, when he traveled through the region and visited Romanesque monuments that would later be described in the work "Journey to Portugal." The Romanesque Route thus proposes a simultaneously historical and literary perspective on the region's heritage.
The stage dedicated to Paredes is scheduled for September 27 and also includes passages through the Monastery of Ferreira, in Paços de Ferreira, and the Monastery of Paço de Sousa, in Penafiel. In the case of Paço de Sousa, the visit will be conducted only on the exterior. The Monastery of Cête will be the last monument on the route before the closing of the programming.
The Romanesque Route programming runs between September 19 and 27, covering nine municipalities of Tâmega e Sousa. The closing takes place on the same day, September 27, at 5:00 PM, at the Church of Valadares, in Baião, with a concert by the woodwind trio of the Atlantic Coast Orchestra. The guided visits are free, but require prior registration until September 24, with transportation between monuments being the responsibility of the participants.
