Coliseu do Porto needs more funding and Government admits additional support

Jornal 36010 September 2026 at 10:50

Coliseu do Porto may receive new additional European funding to expand the rehabilitation works currently underway in the building. NORTE 2030 has already allocated 2.6 million euros to the intervention, but the works have revealed new needs and the Government, Porto City Council and CCDR NORTE are considering increasing the investment. The possibility was announced during a site visit on Wednesday, with the presence of the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, accompanied by the President of CCDR NORTE, Álvaro Santos, the Mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, and the President of Coliseu, Miguel Guedes.

The current intervention represents an investment of 3.08 million euros, with 2.45 million co-financed through ERDF. The European funding also includes 149 thousand euros for the re-equipment of Coliseu, in an investment of approximately 175 thousand euros. Manuel Castro Almeida considered that the available budget is "in fact very short" for the scale of the intervention and revealed a joint willingness to increase its ambition, with an understanding with Porto City Council to seek additional funding for the works.

The works, which began in July 2025, are revealing problems and needs that were not initially identified. Miguel Guedes explained that, in the building's more than 80 years of existence, a complete mapping of Coliseu had never been done, resulting in "every day being a surprise." The work includes the rehabilitation of the facade, installation of elevators, lighting and air conditioning interventions and the creation of the Coliseu Museum, with the cultural programming maintained during the works.

Coliseu has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2012 and continues to be one of the main cultural venues in the North. Álvaro Santos considered that Coliseu is an "essential venue for Porto and the North" and deserves an intervention worthy of its history and importance. The completion of the intervention is expected for 2027.
