President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned a law that ends the tax on international purchases of up to 50 dollars. The sanction ceremony took place at the Palácio do Planalto.
In his speech during the event, Lula rebutted the arguments presented by Brazilian businessmen. Businessmen from the commerce sector had argued that the end of the tax would cause losses to Brazilian commerce and job losses.
The new legislation modifies the taxation of low-value international purchases, exempting products of up to 50 dollars from import taxes. With the sanction, the measure goes into effect for consumers who make purchases on international websites and platforms.
