One year later, former prime minister José Sócrates returned to the defendant's bench this Thursday, within the scope of the Marquês case. This was the first time he appeared in court in a year.

Sócrates again affirmed that he has no lawyer and that he has faced a false accusation for 12 years. The former government official continues in his saga of defending his innocence in a process involving suspicions of corruption, tax fraud, and money laundering.

The Marquês case is one of the largest criminal investigation cases in Portugal, involving dozens of defendants and multiple accusations related to alleged crimes committed during the period when José Sócrates was prime minister, between 2005 and 2011.
