The hottest summer ever left a Europe of records

The summer of 2024 was the hottest ever in Europe, leaving a legacy of historical records across several countries on the continent. Seven European nations recorded their hottest summer ever measured, surpassing all previous temperatures.

In other countries, thermometers exceeded limits never before reached. Records were broken for maximum temperature, consecutive hot nights, duration of heat waves and the total number of heat waves throughout the season.

Data collected during the months of June, July and August confirm that these records were not isolated cases, but rather part of a pattern that has been repeating consistently over recent years.

Experts warn that the trend is set to continue, with the likelihood of new records being established in coming years, unless significant measures are taken to halt global warming.
