The Municipality of Ourém proposed applying a tourist tax of two euros per overnight stay in the municipality, which generated strong opposition from the Sanctuary of Fátima and local hoteliers.
The Sanctuary of Fátima, which is one of the main Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world and a driving force of tourism in the region, expressed its opposition to this measure, considering that it may drive away pilgrims and visitors.
Local hoteliers also opposed the proposal, arguing that the tax may harm the competitiveness of Fátima's hotel sector and deter tourists.
