Caixa and Banco do Brasil employees go on strike

extra10 September 2026 at 20:17

Employees of Banco do Brasil and Caixa Econômica Federal went on strike on Thursday (the 10th) for an indefinite period. The strike happened after the categories did not accept the proposed collective bargaining agreement.

In the case of Caixa, the strike is nationwide. Workers from the base of the São Paulo, Osasco and Region Bank Employees Union approved the strike on August 4th, after rejecting the renewal of the Collective Labor Agreement (ACT). According to the National Confederation of Financial Sector Workers (Contraf-CUT), the proposal received more than 90% rejection in union branches. Negotiations with Caixa resumed on Wednesday.

At Banco do Brasil, the strike is partial. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCT) was not approved in unions in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Pernambuco, and Florianópolis. The strike will be maintained until new assemblies make a decision, according to union representatives.

ANAV welcomes European rejection of Booking's acquisition of Etraveli and warns of concentration risk

ANAV – the National Association of Travel Agencies – welcomed the decision of the General Court of the European Union confirming the blocking of Booking Holdings' acquisition of Etraveli Group, considering it essential for the defence of Tourism and the balance of the European market. The court rejected Booking's appeal and upheld the European Commission's 2023 decision, which prevented the operation arguing that the purchase would strengthen Booking's dominant position in the online travel agencies market and that this power could be used to dominate other segments such as air transport. The association, led by Miguel Quintas, stressed that diversity of distribution channels is essential for consumer freedom of choice, for innovation and to ensure the survival of independent travel agencies, advocating for balanced conditions between large digital platforms and independent operators.

Nova SBE identifies opportunities to make social welfare payments in Portugal more efficient

A study by Nova SBE, in partnership with the Fast Forward Foundation, analyzed for the first time the complete journey of social welfare payments in Portugal, which move more than 86 billion euros annually. The study Welfare Sector Payments – Portugal reveals that the country has favorable conditions for modernization, such as solid financial infrastructure and developed digital public services, but the main challenges lie in coordination between entities, information exchange and process validation, where delays and inefficiencies arise. The analysis proposes six improvement pathways, including the creation of a coordination space dedicated to social payments, end-to-end performance measurement, defining clear data exchange responsibilities, leveraging instant payments, strengthening proximity channels for vulnerable citizens, and continuously monitoring beneficiary satisfaction. Ricardo Zózimo, from Nova SBE, highlighted that "the challenge is no longer technological, it is about coordination between institutions."
