The Government issued an order on July 6 with instructions to Parpública to purchase up to 20% of the capital of REN (Rede Elétrica Nacional). This decision comes within the scope of a strategic operation to reinforce the State's participation in the company.
The Portuguese State paid 389.8 million euros to the owner of Zara, the Spanish group Inditex, for the acquisition of a 13.7% position in REN. This transaction represents a significant step in the strategy of partial nationalisation of energy infrastructure.
The State's entry into the board of REN justifies the payment of a 15% premium over the market value of the shares. This premium is presented as necessary to ensure the governance and strategic control of the country's critical energy infrastructure.
