Vines from the Iberian Peninsula came from the Mediterranean 3,000 years ago – Study

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 19:35

The first cultivated vineyards in the Iberian Peninsula had their origin in the Eastern Mediterranean and arrived in the region about 3,000 years ago, according to research carried out by the University of Valencia.

The study revealed that these ancestral vineyards still survive today, through crossings with local varieties over the centuries.

The research demonstrates that viticulture in the Iberian Peninsula has deep roots and that cultivation and crossing practices allowed the preservation of these ancient varieties to the present day.

This knowledge can contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the Iberian wine heritage, which carries a genetic inheritance of thousands of years.

Low bone volume hinders implants, but there are options available

A 2019 IBGE survey reveals that 34 million Brazilian adults have lost 13 or more teeth, and 14.1 million have no teeth at all. Among elderly people aged 60 or over, nearly one third has lost all teeth. The problem is that without the tooth, the alveolar bone that supported it loses up to 50% of its width in the first year after extraction, making it difficult to place dental implants. However, there are techniques and treatment options available for patients with low bone volume, according to dental implant specialists.

Should you wash rice before cooking it? Here is the answer and the reason few people know

A study published in 2025 in the scientific journal 'Food Chemistry' analyzed whether it is necessary to wash rice before cooking it and found that washing can reduce the concentration of harmful heavy metals, such as cadmium and lead, by up to 50%. The research tested different varieties of rice, including white, brown and basmati, and also evaluated the impact on essential minerals, such as iron. The study used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for a detailed analysis of the multi-element bioaccessibility of long-grain rice, offering a perspective on the risks associated with arsenic and other elements.
