In October 2025, the Judicial Court of Leiria convicted a teacher to one year and two months in prison, suspended for the same period, for the crime of negligent homicide. The teacher was responsible for a sports activity when the accident occurred.
The victim's parents filed a civil action against the teacher seeking compensation of almost 500 thousand euros for the death of their son. The child died after a goalpost fell during the activity supervised by the teacher.
The court considered it proven that the teacher acted negligently by failing to ensure adequate safety conditions during the sports activity. The suspended sentence means the teacher will not go to prison as long as he complies with certain conditions established by the court.
