Drought in Cantareira, Sabesp and El Niño Put Climate in the Spotlight in São Paulo Governor Campaigns

oglobo10 September 2026 at 18:40

Twelve years after being one of the main themes of a gubernatorial election, the fear of a water crisis in São Paulo is again marking the debate among candidates. The reservoirs of Greater São Paulo are below 50% capacity, with the main one, Cantareira, at around 33%, eight months after the system hit its worst mark since the historic low of 2014, with less than 25% in the summer.

The threat has made climate gain prominence in the campaign, alongside issues normally more present in elections, such as security and health. The topic has been used by opposition candidate Fernando Haddad (PT) to attack incumbent Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos) in interviews and debates.

Water security is not the only climate-related topic that has permeated the electoral debate. The impact of storms, rural fires, and the performance of Sabesp are also mentioned in government platforms and candidate statements.

See what is #FACT or #FAKE in Anthony Garotinho's interview with O GLOBO, Extra, Valor and CBN

The candidate for governor of Rio by Republicanos, Anthony Garotinho, was interviewed on Thursday by O GLOBO, Extra, Valor and CBN. In the 1h30 interview, he minimized his rejection and the arrests he suffered, besides blaming Michelle for the non-disclosure of the "night of the Astronauts" video. Garotinho also proposed a "BOPE 2.0" and the creation of subway line 3 with "super ferries", but dodged questions about support for Lula or his son Flavio Bolsonaro, leaving his presidential vote open. The series of interviews began with Douglas Ruas (PL), continued with William Siri (PSOL), and will be concluded by Eduardo Paes (PSD) on Friday.
