Seahorses from the Tagus estuary will benefit from new shelters created from old shopping carts, in an intervention located in Trafaria. The initiative comes within the scope of a marine biodiversity conservation project.
The main objective of this intervention is to compensate for the loss of natural habitats affecting the species in the region. Seahorses have been losing their traditional refuges, which puts their survival in the estuary at risk.
The Tagus wetland area is considered one of the most important in Europe in terms of biodiversity. The introduction of these artificial shelters aims to reinforce this biodiversity, offering safe alternatives for the local marine fauna.
Trafaria, in the municipality of Almada, was the chosen location for the installation of these structures. The transformation of shopping carts into shelters represents a creative and sustainable approach to the recovery of degraded habitats.
