IMF denies having sidelined Ricardo Reis over Trump criticism

Observador10 September 2026 at 18:35

The International Monetary Fund publicly denied having sidelined Portuguese economist Ricardo Reis from the race for the institution's chief economist position. The denial comes after the Financial Times reported that Ricardo Reis had been excluded from the selection process.

The IMF stated that it "does not exclude a candidate because of their academic research," referring to the criticism Reis directed at policies of US President Donald Trump.

Ricardo Reis is a Portuguese economist who was competing for the position of chief economist at the fund, a position of great prestige and influence in global economic policies.

The news of Reis's sidelining sparked controversy, raising questions about potential political interference in the IMF's selection processes for senior positions, something the institution sought to address through its official statement.
