Faro assumes management of the commercial quay and prepares marina for 500 vessels

Postal do Algarve10 September 2026 at 18:00

The Municipality of Faro will assume the management of the commercial quay from September 18, through a protocol with the Port Administration of Sines and the Algarve. This transfer results from the work of a commission created to prepare the report that preceded the signing of the agreement. The commercial quay had no regular activity for almost a decade.

With this change, the municipality intends to move forward with the 'Mar Hub' project, which includes the creation of a natural marina in the inner area of the quay, with capacity for approximately 500 vessels. The mayor of Faro, António Miguel Pina, stated that they believe they have conditions to build one of the best natural marinas in the country, without losing sight of the possible expansion of the outer dock.

The project is practically concluded and the environmental impact study should begin within one or two months. The mayor argued that the intervention represents an opportunity to transform Faro's relationship with the sea, combining tourism, heritage, culture and economic activity, in order to combat seasonality and ensure employment and life throughout the year.

The marina aims to recover and regenerate an area that was landfilled for many years. The municipality believes the new space can revitalize the area and give a new horizon to the former commercial quay of Faro.
