The Faro City Council will assume management of the commercial quay on September 18th, which will allow progress on the creation of a natural marina in the interior area of this infrastructure. The project, called "Hub Mar", also predicts other infrastructures linked to nautical activities and research.
The mayor of Faro, António Miguel Pina, believes there are conditions to create "one of the best natural marinas in the country", without disregarding the possibility of expanding the exterior dock. The mayor highlighted that the project represents tourism, heritage and culture, allowing the transformation of the city's history into economic value without converting it "into an empty product".
The project is "practically concluded" and the environmental impact study should move forward "within a month or two". The transfer of the infrastructure to municipal management results from the work of a commission created to prepare a report prior to signing the protocol with the Port Administration of Sines and the Algarve.
The Commercial Quay of Faro has been without regular activity for almost a decade. The local authority thus intends to combat seasonality and ensure that the city has activity, employment and life throughout the year.
