The Spanish Congress approved a law to grant nationality to Sahrawi people born before 1977. The proposal was led by the Sumar party and secured 168 votes in favor. Vox voted against with 31 votes, while the PP abstained with 145 votes. The law will still have to pass through the Senate for its full ratification.
In Congress, a group of Sahrawis was waiting for the outcome of the initiative. After the approval, they stood up to applaud along with other deputies, including Tesh Sidi, the Sahrawi deputy from Sumar.
For the Sahrawis, this law not only gives them the opportunity to have Spanish nationality, but also represents a way to take responsibility for the history they lived through and to no longer feel abandoned.
