A Father on Earth, a Daughter on Mars: the future according to Tiago Rodrigues

Público10 September 2026 at 17:08

Tiago Rodrigues, current director of the Avignon Festival, presents "La Distance", his first science fiction work. The play explores the theme of a father who remains on Earth while his daughter lives on Mars, inverting the usual dynamic in which it is the children who leave.

The story focuses on a radical love between the two main characters, which is tested by the interplanetary distance. Generational conflict also plays a central role in the narrative, reflecting the tensions that exist between parents and children when they are separated by extreme circumstances.

Among the dramatic elements of the play, a tear gas bomb elevated to the interplanetary power stands out, possibly symbolizing the obstacles and difficulties that separate the two characters. This image serves as a metaphor for the physical and emotional barriers between them.

"La Distance" represents a new direction in Tiago Rodrigues' career, who is better known for his work in contemporary theatre and festival direction, and marks his entry into the science fiction genre, adapting universal themes of family and love to the context of space exploration.

Review of 'Mother's Baby (La semilla)', a psychological disturbance film

The review analyzes 'Mother's Baby (La semilla)', a psychological disturbance film that doesn't hide its inspiration in Roman Polanski's 'Rosemary's Baby'. The Spanish distribution reinforced this connection by adding 'La semilla' to the title. The film presents the same ambiguity as Polanski's classic: the viewer questions whether what happens to the protagonist is real or if it results from obsessive and delusional post-partum depression, exactly as happened with Mia Farrow's character in Polanski's 1968 film.
