The new bishop of the Algarve, Vitorino José Pereira Soares, will take canonical possession on September 19 at 11:30, at the Cathedral of Faro, as announced by the Diocese of the Algarve. The ceremony is considered a significant moment for the life of the Algarve Church and is expected to bring together communities, families, priests, deacons, consecrated persons, laypeople, and institutional representatives.
Vitorino José Pereira Soares was Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Porto and was appointed Bishop of the Algarve by Pope Leo XIV on July 14. He succeeds Manuel Neto Quintas, who continues as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of the Algarve until the canonical entry of the new bishop.
The celebration will take place at the Cathedral of Faro, a central site in the Christian history of the Algarve, marking the beginning of a new chapter and projecting the community into the future.
