Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 113,000 deaths per year in Spain, more than 300 deaths per day, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). These alarming figures highlight the gravity of the public health problem in the country.
The president of the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC), doctor Andrés Íñiguez Romo, defended at an event held in Madrid, on the occasion of the start of Heart Month, that cardiovascular prevention should begin from early ages. Contrary to what many people think, it is not necessary to wait until adulthood to adopt healthy habits.
There is very solid scientific evidence that links cardiovascular health status during childhood with the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases in adulthood, according to Dr. Íñiguez Romo. This means that good habits must be acquired from childhood to prevent heart problems in the future.
