The Portuguese Government is preparing a profound reorganization of the first six years of schooling. The plan consists of integrating the current 1st cycle (1st to 4th year) and 2nd cycle (5th and 6th years) into a single cycle of education.
This structural change is expected to take effect in the 2027/2028 school year. The reorganization will imply significant alterations in the way teaching is organized during these initial six years.
The transformation will not be limited to the administrative structure. The change will be accompanied by a complete review of the curriculum framework and essential learning, which may alter contents, subjects, and teaching methods currently used at these school stages.
