France withdraws support for Infantino's FIFA re-election bid

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 14:30

The French Football Federation withdrew its support for Gianni Infantino's FIFA presidential re-election. The decision was made after what the federation described as a "breach of trust."

The main reason for the withdrawal of support was Infantino's project to open the World Cup to private investors. The French federation expressed opposition to this proposal.

The FIFA presidential elections are scheduled for March 2027. With France's withdrawal, Infantino loses the support of one of the main European federations.

French Federation withdraws support for Infantino's re-candidacy

The French Football Federation decided, unanimously, to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino's re-candidacy for the FIFA presidency. The federation justifies the decision for two main reasons: for being one of the founding members of the entity and for the high place it occupies in the world football ranking. This decision represents a significant departure from the incumbent president, who is seeking a third term at the head of the organization that governs world football.
