ECB confirms what's expected: interest rate rises 25 basis points

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 13:44

The European Central Bank (ECB) confirmed what was widely expected by analysts and financial markets. The institution decided to raise the interest rate by 25 basis points.

This decision is in line with the forecasts that economic analysts had made in the preceding weeks. The markets had already factored in this rise in their operations.

The 25 basis point increase represents the fourth consecutive restrictive monetary policy move by the ECB, in a context of fighting inflation in the euro area.

ECB interest rate hike increases pressure on mortgage payments, Deco PROteste warns

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates by 0.25 basis points, setting the deposit rate at 2.5%, which will increase pressure on Portuguese families with mortgage loans, Deco Proteste warned. The 6-month Euribor, the most used in Portugal, has risen 26% since the beginning of the Middle East conflict, and 12-month Euribor approached 3% in August. The association recommends that consumers check their payment review dates, simulate different scenarios, and consider alternatives such as renegotiation or transferring the loan to another institution.
