The European Commission announced it wants a new strategy for 'distant' Europe, which includes the outermost regions of the Azores and Madeira. Brussels intends to implement specific measures for these nine regions that face particular geographical and socioeconomic challenges due to their remote location.
The proposed strategy includes as priorities the reduction of poverty and better access to education and housing for the populations of these regions. It also aims to promote employment and social inclusion, ensuring more equitable living conditions for residents of the most isolated areas.
Another important focus of this strategy is guaranteeing access to health and drinking water, essential services that can be more difficult to ensure in regions dispersed and distant from the continent. The European Commission recognizes that it is necessary to create legislation adapted to the particularities of these nine outermost regions.
