Trump claims to hope war with Iran ends after November, but advisors contest, newspaper reports

cbn10 September 2026 at 13:38

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, stated in a speech at the Republican Party convention that he hopes the war with Iran ends after the US midterm elections in November. Trump declared that Tehran was trying to influence the voting, which will determine whether his party will maintain control of Congress. According to him, the conflict would end immediately after the election because Iran would not be able to resist any longer.

The war and the consequent rise in fuel prices contributed to Trump's popularity reaching historically low levels. The US president had previously set deadlines for the end of the war but never met any of them.

The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported that senior White House officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, privately warned Trump that the conflict could last for the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2029.
