The latest ECMWF forecasts indicate that Portugal may face up to four consecutive weeks with temperatures above the climatological average, in a trend that may extend into the first half of October. The September heat is thus far from over, with the positive signal in temperatures remaining for several weeks.
A new heat dome is expected to hit the country in the coming days, with the peak expected on September 14th. This heat wave arrives after a period already marked by temperatures well above the usual for this time of year.
The change in weather conditions begins this weekend, specifically on Saturday, the 12th, when a very hot air mass should affect Portuguese territory. This situation maintains the intense heat trend that has been characterizing the month of September in the country.
The ECMWF sub-seasonal forecasts thus point to a prolonged persistence of high temperatures, breaking the typical pattern for this time of year and anticipating an autumn with unusual thermal conditions for Portugal.
