The European Commission presented this Thursday a new strategy for the nine outermost regions of the European Union, accompanied by a regulatory package aimed at adapting community legislation to the particular conditions of these territories.
Among the nine regions covered are the Azores and Madeira, two Portuguese territories that, due to their remote and island location, face specific challenges that justify differentiated treatment in the application of European rules.
The regulatory package aims precisely to recognize these geographical and economic difficulties, allowing community legislation to be applied more flexibly and appropriately to the reality of these regions.
This initiative comes within the scope of a broader effort by Brussels to ensure that European policies do not penalize territories with characteristics that go beyond the European continent.
