The National Statistics Institute confirmed that inflation accelerated in August to 3.3%, with the increase in diesel prices being one of the main causes of this acceleration. This data is relevant for tenants in Portugal, as inflation is the determining factor for rent updates.
According to INE data, rents may rise by up to 2.56% next year. This means that, for every thousand euros of current rent, tenants may have to pay an additional 25.60 euros per month from 2027 onwards.
This update is in line with the legal mechanism for annual rent updates, which uses the inflation rate as a reference. The 2.56% increase represents a moderate value when compared to previous years, but it continues to represent an additional burden for households paying rent.
The growth in inflation in August, driven mainly by the increase in diesel prices, thus confirmed forecasts that rents in Portugal would have a significant update next year, affecting thousands of tenants across the country.
