The mechanism in question allows carbon licenses to be removed from the market, thereby reducing the available supply. This approach aims to strengthen the environmental ambition of the European system.
In practice, when fewer licenses are available on the market, the greater the pressure on companies to reduce their emissions tends to be. This happens because the scarcity of licenses increases competitiveness among market participants.
As a result of this lower availability, the carbon price tends to rise. Higher carbon prices incentivize companies to invest in cleaner technologies and adopt more sustainable production practices, thereby contributing to the decarbonization objectives of the European economy.
