In 2025, Spain experienced the most devastating year of the century in terms of forest fires, with 354,790 hectares of forest area affected, according to the Annual Report of the Attorney General's Office. Although the number of incidents was 8,189, below the average of the last ten years, the burned area was the highest recorded in this century.
A total of 439 people were detained or investigated for fires during that period. Intentional fires represented 32.4% of the total, the highest figure in the last five years, meaning that one in three fires was deliberately caused.
The Attorney General's Office highlighted that 2025 was one of the most virulent years regarding forest fires, underscoring the gravity of the situation despite the number of occurrences being below the historical average.
