'Trump Dividends': Promise to Pay $5,000 to Each American in Case of Electoral Victory Raises Question About Electoral Crime

oglobo10 September 2026 at 12:22

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, promised a $5,000 check (R$25,500) for every American adult, if the Republican Party wins the midterm elections in November and maintains control of Congress. The promise was made during an event designed by the president to mobilize the Republican base, on Wednesday night.

The proposal raised questions about whether the measure would correspond to electoral crime or not. The estimated cost of the program was calculated by the New York Times at $1.3 trillion (R$5.1 trillion), a significant amount that generated debates about the feasibility and legality of the promise.

Trump is in electoral mode in the final stretch leading up to the midterm elections, which will be held in November. The event was organized as part of the Republican base mobilization strategy, at a time when the party seeks to maintain its majority in Congress.
