Sócrates denies influence on lawyers' resignation and speaks of character assassination

The former Prime Minister José Sócrates spoke again in the trial of the Operation Marquês case, repeating what he had said a year ago. Before addressing the points in the accusation, Sócrates stated that he wanted to clarify some aspects of the case.

Sócrates considered that "the idea of fair play is the supreme idea that should guide our criminal doctrine", demonstrating his position on the trial procedures.

Regarding the resignation of his lawyers, the former Prime Minister clarified that this was a decision made exclusively by them, refusing any type of influence in this process. "The resignation of my lawyers was decided by them", he stated.

During his intervention, José Sócrates accused the court of character assassination, expressing his dissatisfaction with how the trial has been proceeding and with the treatment he has been receiving from the judicial instance.
