In August 2026, 3,151 new companies were incorporated in Portugal, 8.8% fewer than in the same period last year, representing 303 fewer incorporations than in August 2025. The year-to-date cumulative total maintains a trajectory below that observed in previous years.

Lisbon leads company creation with 11,127 incorporations, followed by Porto with 6,447 and Setúbal with 2,904. The biggest growths are recorded in Angra do Heroísmo with 27%, Vila Real with 5.8%, Santarém with 6.1% and Coimbra with 4.7%.

Conversely, Madeira presents the biggest decline with 21%, followed by Ponta Delgada with 18%, Évora with 16% and Faro with 8.8%. These data show that Alentejo, through Évora, and the Algarve, through Faro, face difficulties in creating new companies.

At the sectoral level, the biggest increases are observed in Mining Industry with 20% and Construction and Public Works with 13%. The biggest declines occur in the Electricity, Gas and Water sectors with 28%, Agriculture, Hunting and Fishing with 26% and Telecommunications with 23%.
