Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has been betting heavily on defense to face the Russian threat. This investment aims to strengthen the military capabilities of European member states in the face of the new security context on the continent.
As part of this strategy, the European Union will lend 150 billion euros to member states. The loan is granted through the SAFE program, which aims to support European countries in strengthening their defense capabilities.
Portugal is one of the 19 countries that has already applied to the SAFE program. The country intends to benefit from this European financing to strengthen its military capabilities in the context of the new European defense policy.
