The presidents of the parish councils of Beringel, Vítor Besugo, and of Figueira de Cavaleiros, José Duarte, both elected by the PS (Socialist Party), expressed their "discontent" for not having been invited to the inauguration of the new road variants to these two localities on the IP8, held last Tuesday, October 8, with the presence of the Secretary of State for Infrastructure. The mayors guarantee that it is "difficult to understand" that the government official would travel to their territories to inaugurate works of importance without the presidents of the respective parish councils having been formally invited. In Beringel, the council president was not even informed of the ceremony, while in Figueira de Cavaleiros, the mayor was informed only on the same day by the president of the Municipal Council of Ferreira do Alentejo, but, having received no official invitation, decided not to attend. The two mayors defend that what is at stake is "the institutional respect due to the parish council presidents and, through them, to the populations they democratically represent", emphasizing that they are the ones who are daily in the territory, listen to the populations and stand up when answers need to be found. Despite congratulating themselves on these works, the mayors stress that they cannot be "in the front line when there are problems and be the last to be remembered when inaugurations arrive", considering it an "unjustifiable lack of institutional consideration".
