Mais Semanário10 September 2026 at 12:05

On Wednesday, September 9th, the groundbreaking ceremony for the future Guilhabreu School Centre took place, marking the official start of the requalification and expansion of Escola Básica Gonçalo Mendes da Maia. The total investment is almost five million euros, co-funded by PT2030.

The project will allow the entire school community of the parish of Guilhabreu to be concentrated in a single space, currently scattered across three educational establishments. The intervention includes the complete requalification of the existing building and the construction of a new block, with an expected duration of 24 months.

The new building will have two activity rooms for pre-school education and four classrooms for the 1st cycle, as well as a teachers' room, spaces for non-teaching staff, a multi-purpose area, after-school care rooms, kitchen and canteen. The acquisition of adjacent land will enable the creation of new recreation areas, recreational-sports facilities and a covered playground.

The municipality considers this operation as structural for the reordering of the municipal educational network, contributing to a more balanced coverage of the territory and to better conditions for teaching and learning in the parish.

Capela do Fôro Restores Altar Painting

The altar painting at Capela do Fôro, in Jardim da Serra, Madeira, was recently restored at a cost of 21,370 euros, resolving chronic problems of humidity and water infiltration that had affected the work since the 1980s. The current painting is an adapted interpretation from that period, as the original composition was lost during the enlargement of the temple to serve as the parish headquarters. The restoration included wall insulation and the application of canvases for greater durability, mostly funded by the parish fund (14,713 euros), complemented by donations from parishioners, the Junta de Freguesia do Jardim da Serra, and Mass offering collections. The intervention also allowed for the integration of a cross donated to the chapel and the recovery of the original pictorial framing of the altar.
