Overall consumption in Portugal in July and August of this year increased 6% in the number of operations and 3% in value, compared to the same period last year, according to data from SIBS Analytics. The average value per transaction was 38 euros, with one in every six transactions on the MULTIBANCO Network being made with foreign cards. The Leisure sector recorded a significant increase of 20% in the number of transactions and 7% in value, while Restaurants showed growth of 10% in the number of operations and 8% in value.
Consumption by foreign tourists in Portugal increased 5% in number of transactions and 1% in value, with an average value per operation of 39 euros. Tourists from France (19%), United Kingdom (14%), Spain (12%), Germany (7%), and the United States (7%) contributed the most to this dynamism, representing the Top 5 of the share of transactions in total foreign consumption in Portugal.
Portuguese tourists, both in Portugal and abroad, saw an increase of 6% in the number of operations and 3% in the value of consumption, with an average value of 37 euros. In Portugal, the District of Faro was the preferred destination with 12% of the share of transactions, followed by Lisbon also with 12% and Porto with 6%, while Leiria closed the top 5 with 5% of transactions.
Regarding Portuguese consumption exclusively abroad, Spain concentrated 46% of transactions, followed by France with 14%, Italy with 7%, Belgium and Germany with 4% each. Spain stands out as the preferred destination for Portuguese people abroad, with 13% of the share of transactions and an increase of 11% compared to 2025, with the main emitters being Portuguese from the districts of Lisbon and Porto.
