The State Secretary of Prison Police of Rio de Janeiro (Seppen) carried out Operation Illicitus on Wednesday, which resulted in the seizure of 28 cellular phones and approximately one kilogram of drugs during searches carried out in four prison units in the state.

The inspections took place at Presídio Romeiro Neto, in Magé, in Baixada Fluminense; at Instituto Penal Edgar Costa, in Niterói, in the Metropolitan Region; at Penitentiary Talavera Bruce, in Bangu, in the West Zone of the capital; and at Presídio Nelson Hungria, in the Gericinó Complex, also in the West Zone.

The operation aims to combat organized crime in the prison system, dismantling communication between members of criminal factions who are imprisoned and those who remain in freedom.

According to Seppen, the actions are systematic and involve the integrated work of the Operational and Intelligence Sub-secretariats.
