The use of sludge to fertilize agricultural land is generating strong complaints from the populations of Castro Verde and Aljustrel, in the Alentejo region. Residents report a foul smell and the presence of "clouds" of flies in the affected areas.
The Government decided to intervene in the situation and demanded explanations from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Coordination Commission for Regional Development of Alentejo (CCDR Alentejo) about the situation.
A 10-day deadline was given for both entities to present measures to solve the problem that has been affecting the quality of life of the populations of these Alentejo towns.
