The Portuguese Government will make five million euros available to support the restructuring and reconversion of vineyards affected by the series of storms that hit the country between late January and mid-February. The funds will be channeled through an exceptional application period for the VITIS scheme, intended for winegrowers who can prove the losses they have suffered.
The measure, established by an ordinance published in the Official Gazette, applies to the 2026/2027 wine campaign and aims to allow affected producers to recover damaged plots and continue their activity. The application process is carried out online, through the Institute for the Financing of Agriculture and Fisheries (IFAP), with deadlines set and announced by the Vine and Wine Institute (IVV).
The support comes as a result of the extreme weather events recorded at the beginning of the year, particularly storm Kristin, which led the Government to declare a state of calamity in several municipalities. The exceptional scheme also allows for the extension of application and decision deadlines whenever circumstances warrant it, also providing maximum eligible area limits depending on the location of the plots.
VITIS is one of the main tools for supporting vineyard modernization, financing procedures such as replanting and grafting. The 2026/2027 campaign is expected to produce 6.7 million hectoliters of wine, 12% more than the previous campaign, although it remains 4% below the average of the last five campaigns.
