Construction of a new McDonald's restaurant began exactly one month ago, on August 10, about 40 meters from EB 2/3 Soares dos Reis School in Vila Nova de Gaia. The establishment is being built opposite the RTP facilities on Monte da Virgem, in a location that surprised local residents and school authorities.
The director of the Soares dos Reis School Grouping expressed opposition to the proximity of the fast-food restaurant to the school, which accommodates students from 5th to 9th grade. The Mayor of the municipal council is also reportedly involved in opposing this development, although the text appears to be cut off.
A public petition has now emerged against the lack of a construction permit and against the very location of the new commercial space. The signatories question both the excessive proximity of the restaurant to an educational institution and the absence of any formal licensing process that has been made public.
