Wegovy, a medication from the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, was approved in China for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, a liver disease that represents the leading cause of liver transplants in the country.
With this approval, Wegovy becomes the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist specifically indicated for the treatment of this pathology, which can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is associated with the accumulation of fat in the liver and is closely linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes, conditions that have been significantly increasing in the Chinese population over the past decades.
This authorization comes following previous approvals of the same medication in the United States and the European Union, expanding access for patients with this serious liver condition to an innovative pharmacological treatment.
