North American sociologist Ruth Milkman considered that the right-wing knew how to capitalize on "the political opportunity" generated by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States. According to Milkman, since then the United States has become a nation "definitively more paranoid."

The event known in the United States as "Nine Eleven" (9/11) involved coordinated hijackings by the Islamic fundamentalist organization Al-Qaeda. Four passenger commercial airplanes were hijacked, three of which were crashed into the Twin Towers.
