National suicide prevention hotline received over 25 thousand calls in its first year of activity

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 10:00

The National Suicide Prevention Line celebrated its first anniversary with a total of 25,600 calls received since the beginning of its activity. This number represents the volume of contacts received by the line during this one-year period.

Of the situations identified through the calls, approximately 600 were referred to the National Medical Emergency Institute, INEM, which ensures the follow-up of cases that require more immediate intervention.

Regarding the profile of callers, women and young people between 18 and 29 years old are the group that uses the line the most. However, the data reveal that the majority of suicide cases in the country occur among men and elderly people.

Given this disparity, the clinical coordination of the line announced that it is preparing a new outreach campaign, which aims to more effectively reach the most vulnerable populations.
