At least five people died and 86 remain missing after a fire broke out on a ferry near a tourist destination in the Philippine province of Palawan, the coast guard said Thursday.

The accident occurred when the ferry was off the coast of Palawan, a province known as a popular tourist destination in the Philippines.

The Philippine coast guard confirmed the casualty toll and indicated that rescue operations are ongoing to try to locate the missing.

This incident occurs in a region frequently used for maritime transport of passengers and goods between the various islands of the Philippine archipelago.
