The Government approved the extension of support for agricultural diesel until the end of the year, as well as aid to the fishing sector. The measure was announced as a way to support these sectors in the face of high fuel costs.
The secretary-general of PS, Pedro Romano Carneiro, strongly criticized the Government's decision. In his opinion, the executive is giving support with one hand but taking back twice as much with the other two, referring to the increase in VAT revenue and taxes on fuels.
Carneiro accused the Government of continuing to fill State coffers with more revenue from VAT and taxes on fuels, suggesting that the announced support does not compensate for the amounts the sectors pay in taxes.
The socialist leader considered the measures insufficient and that the executive should take more comprehensive measures to truly support Portuguese farmers and fishermen.
