The IMF blocked the nomination of Ricardo Reis for the position of chief economist after criticism made by the Portuguese economist of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The choice ultimately fell, in July, on Silvana Tenreyro, former Bank of England official and also professor at the London School of Economics. According to sources cited by the Financial Times, Tenreyro shared the assessment that tariffs harm economic growth, but had been less vocal in criticizing the Trump administration.
